"1200 B-52 bombers"?
Really?
Source?
I submit to you, Sir, the following: Boeing, manufacturer of the B-52, built approximately 640-670, maybe around 700, at most, B-52's. Production stopped many years ago. Most pilots are now 10 to 15 years, or more, younger than the newest airframes. The only models left flying are the G and the H. It is possible, if not probable, that all G models are now retired. I have not seen a flying G in a few years. Without checking authoritative books, my memory is that only around 70 to 150 H models were built. If only H models are left, 150 at most is a bit short of "1200." I have multiple books down stairs that contain the production rate info but I decline to check them for the purpose of this email, confident that my recollection is close enough and far more accurate than "1200".
As soon as I read "1200 B-52's," I stopped reading. The data was too inaccurate to warrant my attention any further.
The U.S. Air Force, in my comprehension, never, ever, ever, had "1200 B-52's." And no one, repeat, no one, ever built "1200" of them. If "1200" were built or if they still exists, someone, no, many people, have "cooked the books."
What you forwarded is an excellent example of this: NEVER TRUST AT FACE VALUE ANYTHING IN PRINT!
Ah, I do love my bull shit detectors.
I forwarded this to an ex-US Air Force B-52 support technician and an ex-B-52 navigator and some fellow aviation enthusiasts. I am sure that none will concur with the number 1200 or anything near that.
